What Does Cam Newton’s Entry into $20-Million-a-Year Club Mean for QB Peers?
Tom Pelissero, USA TODAY
(USA Today) — Cam Newton appears to be on the verge of receiving a hefty raise with a new contract that includes a lot of money up front.
That figures to be a welcome development for other young franchise quarterbacks — namely the Indianapolis Colts’ Andrew Luck and Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson, whose agents are in the midst of negotiations on their second contracts as well.
Newton and the Carolina Panthers were closing in on a five-year extension through the 2020 season worth more than $100 million, a person with knowledge of negotiations told USA TODAY Sports on Monday.
Unlike the performance-driven deals signed last year by Newton’s 2011 QB draftmates, Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers and Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals, a significant chunk of the contract is expected to be fully guaranteed at signing, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal wasn’t done.
