Why Is Kanye West Calling Ralph Lauren His ‘Daddy’?

(People) – This past season of New York Fashion Week, rapper-slash-fashion guru Kanye West debuted his first show at New York Fashion Week in partnership with Adidas Originals.

For the star, the collaboration (and all the spandex therein) was a long time coming. For the rest of us, it was an interesting style surprise. To celebrate the his new gig, he sat down with the New York Times‘s fashion magazine, T, to share his style inspiration, what it was like meeting his fashion idol and more.

The 37-year-old always hoped to make it in the industry. “I dreamed, since I was a little kid, of having my own store where I could curate every shoe, sweatshirt and color,” he told T magazine in the seven-page fashion spread. “I have sketches of it. I cried over the idea of having my own store.”

But until he had a family of his own (including personal fashion mannequin Kim Kardashian), it all seemed like a dream. “I feel like now I have an amazing wife, a super-smart child and the opportunity to create in two major fields,” he said. “Before I had those outlets, my ego was all I had.”
