Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin Declined Offers from Eagles, Auburn, Report Says
[The Sporting News]
Kevin Sumlin, the hottest first-year coach last season, could have been in the NFL with the Eagles or even at Auburn this season instead of Texas A&M.
The Web site, TexAgs.com first reported that the Eagles offered their head-coaching job to Sumlin after Chip Kelly initially turned down the offer. Philadelphia also had Penn State’s Bill O’Brien, Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly and others on their list.
Sumlin acknowledged to the San Antonio Express-News that he’d heard from the NFL, but didn’t specify which team or when.
“Everybody knows what I do (now),”Sumlin told the Express-News. “I’ve never coached in the NFL. I’ve had plenty of opportunities to do that, both as an assistant coach and even as a head coach. But there’s a reason I coach college football, and we’ve got a lot of work to do here. We’re still playing catch-up, and we finished third in the SEC West last year.
