Sony on Tuesday announced the U.S. retail availability of the SmartWatch 2 and two new waterproof Xperia smartphones available as unlocked devices, the Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1.

The electronics giant’s second-generation smartwatch is compatible with any Android smartphone running Android 4.0 or later. Sony is selling the SmartWatch 2 for $199.95 at its own retail outlets and online at store.sony.com; it will also be sold through select online retail partners, the company said.

Sony is billing the new watch as a buy-it-and-go gadget, saying that “[w]ithin minutes of turning SmartWatch 2 on, you will be able to check text messages, calendar events, Gmail, Facebook, and Twitter notifications (including the ability to “like” and re-Tweet from the device), and much more.”

The SmartWatch 2, which Sony first unveiled in June, has longer battery life than its predecessor, offering “three to four days” between charges under standard usage, Sony said. The device also sports an improved, 1.6-inch trans-reflective display with 220-by-176-pixel resolution, which allows for reading in bright sunlight, according to the company.
