Public radio station WDNA 88.9FM will present its third Miami Downtown Jazz Festival on April 9-13 presenting over 11 groups with over 60 musicians at Mary Brickell Village, the Bayside Marketplace Marina Stage, Olympia Theater, Bayfront Park, Tina Hills Pavilion, and the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater.
The highlight of the Festival will be a concert by NEA Jazz Master Benny Golson on Friday, April 12, at 8 p.m. at the Black Archives’ Historic Lyric Theater.
Golson was born in Philadelphia on Jan. 25, 1929. Golson has played in the bands of Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Earl Bostic and Art Blakey.
Opening for Golson will be a trio of musicians comprised of John Hart on guitar, Martin Benerano on piano, and Mark Small on saxophone.
Returning for a rare South Florida appearance will be vocalist Allan Harris, presenting his quintet in a free concert at the Tina Hills Pavillion at Bayfront Park.
