Mideast Sudan Legacies of al-Bashir

In this Sunday, April 12, 2015 photo, stacks of an al-Midan weekly issue, a mouthpiece of Sudan’s Communist party, that were confiscated by the Sudanese security apparatus, lie in the basement of the headquarters of the paper, in Khartoum, Sudan. When the weekly newspaper Al-Midan ran a statement by a rebel group supporting protesters demanding better services, authorities quickly confiscated the edition. The paper’s chief editor, Madeha Abdullah, was hauled before prosecutors and charged with “attempting to topple the constitutional system” _ a crime punishable by death. (AP Photo/Mosa’ab Elshamy)
