George H.W. Bush, the 41st U.S. president and head of a family political dynasty, died Friday. He was 94.

Bush, a World War II naval pilot and Texas oil tycoon, had dealt with numerous medical issues in his later years, including a Parkinson’s-like disease that forced him to use a wheelchair.

His death was announced by his son, former President George W. Bush.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Barbara, who died in April.

Bush, who served two terms as vice president under President Ronald Reagan before winning a lone term as president in 1989, also served as CIA director in the 1970s.

He is survived by his five children, 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
