BALTIMORE (USA Today) —A disturbing video capturing Ray Rice striking his then-fiancée Janay Palmer inside an elevator in Atlantic City in March was released by TMZ early Monday morning, adding context to the domestic violence incident that resulted in a two-game suspension for the Baltimore Ravens running back.

It also set off a new round of criticism aimed at the NFL for its light discipline of Rice – which commissioner Roger Goodell admitted that he regretted, fueling a tougher domestic violence policy.

The video shows Rice knocking Palmer – who is now his wife — to the floor with a left-handed punch. Her head struck a side railing as she fell to the floor. The video also shows Rice dragging an unconscious Palmer from the elevator and dropping her limp body on the floor.

The NFL said a statement that it did not have access to the video during its investigation of Rice.
