(NNPA)—In addition to treating morbid obesity, bariatric surgery also reduces the risk of cancer in obese patients, according to a new study published in Obesity Surgery.

The team of Brazilian researchers at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul found that the average rate of cancer among obese people is about 2.12 cases out of 1,000 people. For those who underwent bariatric surgery, the rate drops to about 1.06 per 1,000 and holds steady for more than 20 years after their surgeries.

The research examined a selection of past studies involving more than 54,000 patients. There was no provable explanation for the link between obesity surgery and cancer prevalence, according to the team.
