A recent study shows that up to one-third of college students who had recently been in a breakup had ‘rebound’ or ‘revenge’ sex to within a month after the split.

The researchers recruited 170 participants who had experienced a breakup in the previous eight months and asked them to fill out weekly reports about their emotions and sexual activity, together with the reasons for engaging in that behaviour.

The results published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour show that thirty-five percent of the participants said they had sex to rebound after the breakup, while 25 percent admitted to having revenge sex.

“People really do use sex as a way to get over or get back at their ex-partner in the aftermath of a breakup,” said Lynne Cooper, a psychologist at the University of Missouri involved with the study.
