Religion Not Basis for Electing Good Leaders

(Sun News) – Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, yesterday, urged Nigerians to stop using religion to decide who becomes what in the country, saying such sentiment is not good for democracy and  good governance.

The governor, who made the call at an inter-faith conference entitled: “Peace, Religious Harmony and Good Governance: Issues and Challenges,” held at Golden Tulip, Festac Town area of Lagos said the quest for good governance should not be used to divide the people  along religious line .

He averred that good governance is a process through which people’s goals and aspirations could be achieved, stressing  that it has no direct bearing with  religious beliefs.

His words: “I read in one of the papers this morning, a statement to the effect that a group is insisting on a Christian governor. I don’t recall the last time that a governor of Lagos was elected on his religious beliefs.
