In the wake of the announcement that his son is gay, Michael Sam’s father told The New York Times he is not comfortable with his son’s sexual orientation.

“I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment,” Michael Sam Sr. said in a Times story profiling his son’s upbringing in Texas, a follow-up to Michael Sam’s announcement Sunday he is gay.

The elder Sam, in the story which reveals Michael Sam has long had a strained relationship with family members, was celebrating his birthday at Denny’s when his son texted him with the revelation last Tuesday, The Times reported.

“I’m old school. I’m a man-and-a-woman type of guy,” the elder Sam added, continuing to tell The Times he had taken an older son to Mexico to lose his virginity.
