On Friday, Egypt’s Civil Aviation Accident Investigation Committee said that the flight data recorder from EgyptAir Flight 804 has been recovered. This may be a key step in helping authorities learn what happened in those key final minutes, before air traffic controllers lost contact with the airplane and it crashed in the Mediterranean Sea nearly a month ago.

The Airbus A320 crashed May 19 in a flight from Paris to Cairo killing 66 people aboard.

This news follows the discovery of wreckage of the airplane, which was found nearby. Though the recorder is damaged, the committee says that they will be able to recover important information.

The flight data recorder will give investigators access to 25 hours of footage from the airplane’s sensors, which records several thousand distinct pieces of information, including air speed, altitude, engine performance and wing positions, according to CNN.

The flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder are heading back to Alexandria, Egypt for review. Once that process is complete, investigators will have a more answers about what caused the mysterious crash.
