Pearl Harbor Hero Dorie Miller Dies In Subsequent Naval Battle
by: Dr. Clint Wilson
Dorie Miller, the U.S. Navy Pearl Harbor hero who left his station as a steward aboard the U.S.S. West Virginia to pull his mortally wounded captain to safety before manning a gun and shooting down several Japanese planes, was lost at sea when the U.S.S. Liscome Bay was sunk by a torpedo on Thanksgiving Day 1943.
Miller was personally awarded the Navy Cross by Admiral Chester Nimitz for his bravery at Pearl Harbor, but many believe his actions deserved the nation’s highest medal for bravery ''above and beyond the call of duty,'' the Congressional Medal of Honor. And, Miller’s supporters agree that the only reason he was not given the highest honor was because he was African American.
Renewed attention was given to Miller with the Spring 2001 release of the motion picture epic ''Pearl Harbor'' in which he was portrayed by actor Cuba Gooding Jr. Although war time secrecy prevented the Black Press from reporting Miller’s death aboard the Liscome Bay nearly two years after the Pearl Harbor attack, it joined with other voices this year in calling for his receiving the Medal of Honor.
