Colin Powell Becomes First Black To Head Joint Chiefs of Staff
by: Dr. Clint Wilson

General Colin Powell, the highest ranking African American in the U.S. military forces, was confirmed as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and not only became the first Black, but also the youngest officer to attain the post.
A native of the Bronx (New York), Powell is the son of Jamaican immigrant parents and served with distinction in various military campaigns including in Viet Nam. He first came to national attention when he served as National Security Adviser in the Reagan administration.
Although Powell now serves as U.S. Secretary of State he first became a source of African American pride with the announcement of his selection as joint chiefs’ chairman in the Black Press.
