(USA Today) – Party-switching ex-congressman Artur Davis is considering a return to his native Alabama and a campaign for mayor of Montgomery.

In an interview with Gannett’s Mary Troyan, the former Democrat-turned-Republican discussed his ideas on how to make Montgomery “the South’s next great city.” He says he’ll make his decision sometime in July.

But as the story notes, the man who seconded President Obama’s nomination in 2008 could face an uphill battle for the non-partisan office. That’s partly because of the way Davis left Alabama “with harsh words for the Democratic Party and the black political organizations that rejected him” in his unsuccessful 2010 bid for governor.
